Description
Colt Manufacturing Company acquired the AR-15 design and trademark from Arma-Lite in 1959. While not the originator of “America’s fighting rifle” Colt was the sole producer of the AR-15 and AR-10 rifle until Arma-Lite’s original patent expired in 1977, leading to the eventual proliferation of AR-15 manufacturers in the marketplace.
This is an opportunity to own a piece of history, particularly a model most associated with the classic AR-15/M16 design.
This particular example (Serial Number SP 225891) is a pre-ban model and mirrors the look and feel of M16’s produced during the 70’s and 80’s. Our research indicates this model was produced between 1986 and 1987. The lower receiver and upper receiver appear to be anodized dark gray. The lower features a two-position safety on the left side of the receiver and right-hand magazine release. The trigger is a mil-spec single stage design with an approximate 5 lb. pull.
The lower receiver is stamped with the Colt logo and “AR-15 A2” above “HBAR Sporter” and “.223”. Note, however, that this is a 5.56 NATO barrel and will fire 5.56 NATO or .223 Rem ammo.
The upper features a blued bolt carrier group, gray anodized charging handle, and integrated (non-detachable) carry handle with rear peep sight. The rear sight can be adjusted for elevation and windage. The rear sight adjustment mechanism mirrors the change from the M16A1 to the M16A2. The finger ridge on the pistol grip and the barrel similarly mirror changes from the A1 to A2 model. Mounted on top of the carry handle is an aftermarket detachable weaver rail, serving as the base for the attached Leupold scope.
The scope is an older design with 3-9x magnification and low capped turrets. The windage and elevation knobs require a coin or similar tool for adjustment. The glass is clear with a simple crosshair reticle. The scope functions well.
The 20” heavy barrel is labeled 5.56 NATO with a 1/7 twist. A weaver style rail is mounted to the underside of the muzzle, allowing the use of bipod. The barrel has a classic “A Frame” front sight, adjustable for elevation with protective wings.
The “retro” handguard is classic M16 with a piece of Velcro that should be removable.
The stock is polymer and non-adjustable. There is a storage compartment in the rear for a cleaning kit or tools. It currently contains Allen wrenches and a supplemental trigger attachment to facilitate firing the rifle with thick gloves.
The stock and handguards are in Excellent condition. The receiver and barrel are Very Good – Excellent with only minor handling or storage marks. The bore is clean, the barrel is bright and the rifling appears to be crisp and sharp.
If you’re after that classic M16 look, this may be the rifle for you. Retro, vintage or maybe just like the one that you were issued in the service. However you want to phrase it, this rifle can be your Main Battle Rifle now!
Purchase includes the rifle as shown, including the two-point sling and scope. No magazines are included.
This is a consignment sale, and like all of our consignments, we have not test fired this firearm. We have performed our function checks and find no issues to report.
